A fire has destroyed commercial unit in Rojales. There have been no personal injuries, but the economic losses are high, according to early estimates. Fire fighters struggled to extinguish the fire in the 1.500 square metre commercial unit located in an industrial area of urbanization Ciudad Quesada in Rojales. The DIY store has been declared a “total loss” as the entire roof has collapsed, according to informed sources in the Provincial Fire Consortium Alicante. The fire was reported at around the 04:15 this morning. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated, according to these sources. Fire fighters from Orihuela, torrevieja , Almoradà and Crevillent attended the incident in order to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to other buildings nearby. Several fire tenders have remained on the scene to keep the fire under control. The judge of the Audiencia Nacional, Fernando Andreu, has ordered the detention of seven suspected Somali pirates rescued and arrested in Indian waters by the spanish ship Marqués de la Ensenada. Andreu has decided to imprisonment for seven buccaneers at the behest of the Prosecutor. The prosecution state that they have been arrested for crimes attributed to the illegal detention, robbery and weapons. Custody for Somali pirates
Spain is facing a problem of what to do with pirates captured in the Indian Ocean. Seven alleged pirates are on board the ship Marquis de la Ensenada , having been rescued from the sea in the Gulf of Aden, after their pirate ship capsized whilst a merchant vessel was trying to flee their threatened attack. The Marqués de la Ensenada received an SOS from a merchant who was being harassed by pirates some 15 miles away. A helicopter from the spanish ship was sent to assist, whereas the crew instead located the pirate ship capsized, apparently due to an evasive move by the Panamanian merchant vessel as she attempted to escape. The capsized boat had several people on board who were rescued by the helicopter . Although these people are suspected of being pirates, there is no obvious evidence of this, because of the state that their vessel was found to be in. The protocol for spanish vessels states that in the case of the arrest of pirates, they must first turn to the Audiencia Nacional, to analyze its jurisdiction over the case. As the threatened foreign-flagged vessel did not suffer the crime of piracy according to the spanish Penal Code in force, the pirates should be handed over to Kenya, under their agreement with the EU, or released. Until now, the spanish soldiers have supported a number of arrests of pirates, but they have never taken charge of them, because they have been caught by vessels of other nationalities, or have been surrendered to the authorities of Seychelles. The spanish government has already started a review of the penal code to cover such events in the future. Share this story:
